Gluten Free Pantry

Marge Gomez

I’m sharing my story because living gluten-free in the Philippines isn’t easy—especially when you come from a family where food is everything. Our gatherings revolve around the dining table, and our love language is home-cooked meals, shared plates, and second helpings.

I have Celiac Disease. I’m the first in my family to be diagnosed, and explaining what that means hasn’t always been easy. It’s not just about avoiding bread or pasta—it’s saying no to so many dishes I grew up loving. One tiny bit of gluten can make me seriously sick. This isn’t a diet trend; it’s a lifelong autoimmune condition that changed how I live—and eat—every single day.

When I was first diagnosed, it felt lonely. I didn’t want to seem difficult or ungrateful, especially around family. But slowly, in time, things started to change. My husband began reading labels with me. My kids started checking ingredients before cooking. My family and friends now make sure there are gluten-free options at gatherings—and even talk about cross-contamination! Those moments, filled with care and understanding, warm my heart more than any meal ever could.

This space is for families like mine—and maybe yours—who are learning together. I want to share what’s worked for us: gluten-free finds here in the Philippines, tips for eating safely, and simple ways to make meals we can still enjoy together.

Whether you’re newly diagnosed, supporting a loved one, or just curious about what living gluten-free means in a Filipino household, I hope you find comfort here.

Food still brings us together. With a little care and creativity, it still can—even gluten-free.
